Radial Shockwave Therapy (rSWT) is a non-invasive (non-surgical) therapeutic use of high intensity ultrasound waves.

Treatment is delivered through a special hand piece to target a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions, in particular, those involving areas where major connective tissue attaches to bone. radial-shockwave-nw-calgary-chiropractor

Shockwave therapy can be used to help treat:

  • Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis or Jogger’s Heel)
  • Elbow Pain (Epicondylitis or Tennis / Golfers Elbow)
  • Tendinitis (Hamstring, Wrists, Achilles…)
  • Minor Muscle Tears
  • Shoulder Calcification Tendonitis
  • Rotator Cuff Tears

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

The basic principles behind shockwave therapy are the high pressured acoustic shockwaves that travel through the skin to stimulate pain relief and tissue repair.

  • Increases blood flow which accelerates healing of the tissue by promoting fibroblasts, collagen organization and reduces inflammation.
  • Stimulates pro-collagen synthesis to increase tendon repair.
  • Disperses substance P and histamines from the nerves which reduces nerve irritation and therefore a decrease in pain.
  • Breaks up calcification as a result of micro-tears or injury to a tendon.

What does shockwave treatment feel like?

The shockwave applicator head passes over the injured area which may cause some mild discomfort during treatment. Treatment only takes up 10-15 minutes depending on the area and severity of the injury.

You will find no known significant complications with shockwave therapy. Many people could get localized bruising. Others will feel discomfort for time.

How many treatments will you need?

Usually patients require only 3 to 5 treatments and have immediate positive results. By the third treatment there is usually long term pain and discomfort reduction. As well, we provide specific strengthening exercises and stretches so together with shockwave treatments there is excellent means to healing.

Book an appointment today and discover how quickly shockwave therapy can improve small discomforts or more significant injuries.
